The Search for the Ultimate Citrus Scent for Summer…

I may work in beauty – specifically as a content manager – but let me start with a confession: I’ve never been a true perfume girl. Skincare and makeup are my thing, my passion, the areas where I’ve built up solid expertise over the years. Fragrance? I’ve always happily left that to others. Some of my colleagues could practically have a PhD in perfume. They know every top, heart, and base note by heart, understand fragrance families, master the art of layering, can tell an Eau de Cologne from an Extrait de Parfum in their sleep – and explain it all with chemical precision.
Me? Well… the world of fragrance feels a bit like rocket science: too complex, too abstract, and honestly, impossibly hard to put into words.

So why should you read a fragrance article written by someone who isn’t an expert? Maybe precisely because of that. Because this is for everyone who feels the same way – for those who struggle to find their scent, to make a decision, and ultimately, to take the plunge and invest.

Maybe you’re like me when it comes to inspiration: you catch a whiff of a gorgeous scent on a friend or colleague and instantly think, I need this in my life! But then, when you finally spray it on your own wrist, reality hits: it smells completely different on me… That kind of disappointment? Sadly, I know it all too well.

And yet, I’m not a “no-perfume” girl. I want a scent – maybe even a few – that travels with me through life, lifts my mood, boosts my confidence, and earns me those magic words: “Wow, you smell amazing!” A true signature fragrance has eluded me so far – for summer or winter. And yes, I know… for someone in my job, that’s borderline embarrassing. But that’s exactly why we’re here.

I’ve been on a months-long quest to find my signature summer scent. And the direction that excites me most – and just happens to be right on trend – is undeniably: citrus. Citrus fragrances speak to me so much more than sweet vanillas or powdery roses. They smell fresh, delicious, and instantly transport me to a sun-soaked vacation – yet they’re perfectly wearable for the office, too.

So, I’ve sniffed my way through countless perfumes and finally found a few gems. These are my five summer go-to’s: scents that feel refreshing without being overpowering, that uplift without clinging – the true high-flyers in the world of citrus fragrances.

But before we dive in, here’s one thing to keep in mind…

Info Box:

Top Note: The first impression of a perfume, usually fades within a few minutes.

Heart Note: Emerges after the top note and defines the character of the fragrance.

Base Note: Lingers the longest on the skin, providing depth and lasting power.

Picture Italian Citrus kicks things off because this Eau de Cologne is my absolute favorite (!!) – and the fragrance that comes closest to capturing the essence of Italy. Think of it as a road trip along the Amalfi Coast: bright, vibrant, and effortlessly elegant. The scent is fresh without being overpowering, and I especially love the warm, soft hint of musk – almost a touch nostalgic. D.S., perfumer and founder, sums it up perfectly: “This scent is more than a tribute to Italian citrus – it’s a memory of places where life feels easy, beautiful, and bright. You don’t just wear it, you experience it.” And I can confirm – that’s exactly how it feels.

Top Notes: Cold-pressed Lemon, Chinotto, Blood Orange
Heart Notes: Green Mandarin, Violet Leaf, Incense
Base Notes: Copaiba Balsam, Ambrette Musk, Oakmoss

PictureAs the name suggests, this fragrance is all about orange. The opening is bold: juicy orange (yum!) meets vibrant energy. But I quickly realized – this scent wants more than just to smell fresh; it wants to make a statement. Pepperwood adds a subtle warmth that balances the brightness beautifully, while Akigalawood – a deep, woody, almost earthy note well-known in the fragrance world – gives the perfume depth. Soft, sensual musk rounds out the composition – I like!

Also in the mix: Iso E Super. I did a little research – Iso E Super is a synthetic fragrance molecule that is barely detectable on a blotter but develops differently on each person’s skin. This is definitely one to test directly on your skin. In this fragrance, it creates an airy, almost floating quality.

My verdict: Orange Crush is perfect for business days when you want to make an impression and radiate confidence.

Top Notes: Bitter Orange, Mandarin, Lemon, Petitgrain, Rosemary, Thyme

Heart Notes: Mint, Peppermint

Base Notes: Cedarwood, Musk, Immortelle (Italian Everlasting Flower)

PictureThe bottle first caught my eye visually, and I immediately loved the name Tangerine Boy. I already enjoy many other fragrances from Phlur, so testing this one was a must. This unisex Eau de Parfum is anything but shy – it truly loves the spotlight. From the very first spritz, its vibrant freshness shines: lemon and ginger create a bright, almost electric opening. Apple, jasmine, and zesty mandarin join in, forming a fruity, slightly floral, juicy, and energetic composition that I genuinely adore. A guaranteed mood boost. 10/10!

Top Notes: Lemon, Ginger, Black Pepper

Heart Notes: Apple, Mandarin, Jasmine Blossom

Base Notes: Amber, Moss

Quercus really surprised me in the best way. Honestly, I first had to Google what an Eau de Cologne actually is. Answer: a light fragrance formulation with only 2–5% perfume oil – so it usually fades quickly. All the more surprising: Quercus lasts remarkably long on me and feels anything but subtle.

The first spritz? Lemon, lime, and bergamot – so fresh it instantly takes me back to my grandmother’s garden. But Quercus doesn’t stop at freshness: jasmine, lily of the valley, and cardamom bring floral warmth and a touch of spice. And the base of sandalwood, musk, and oakmoss gives it something pleasantly earthy and wonderfully elegant.

It’s almost like a freshly pressed white shirt or a stroll through perfectly kept English gardens – classic, never boring, and very “well-mannered.” Perfect for daily wear, yet refined enough for special occasions. And don’t laugh, but this scent makes me think of Hugh Grant – charming, effortlessly British, subtly ironic, and always stylish.

Top notes: Lemon, lime, mandarin, bergamot

Heart notes: Jasmine, lily of the valley, cardamom

Base notes: Oakmoss, sandalwood, galbanum, musk, amber

I hope to connect with you, take you along, inspire you, and spark your curiosity about one or two lemon scents. And maybe you’ll even find your new signature scent among them! What I’ve learned from this personal test is that sometimes it only takes one spritz to feel like the best version of yourself. And: it’s never too late to find your signature scent—even if you’re over 30. Who knows, maybe I’ll be exploring the fragrance category more often in the future.

Happy Spraying!
