by Kathrin Käsemann

Westman Atelier’s Lip PictureEssentials have long been a cult favorite. In addition to the popular Lip Suede Matte Lipsticks, the collection also includes the perfectly coordinated Lip Shape Lip Liners in eight shades. Luxurious formulas with nourishing ingredients deliver exceptional performance—for versatile looks and harmonious color combinations.
PictureWe spoke with Gucci Westman, the founder and celebrity makeup artist, about her favorite lip duos, modern lip contours, and her personal go-to. Psst, she also lets us in on a thing or two about the Met Gala looks…

What role does the Lip Shape Lip Liner play in creating the perfect pout?
It’s all about defining and enhancing the natural lip shape—while adding a bit more dimension and fullness. My approach to lip liner is a natural extension of my overall makeup style: I want to highlight what’s already there—in an almost invisible way. Over time, the shape and color of the lips change… The idea is to selectively restore the desired lip shape.
PictureThat sounds fabulous! Do you have a preferred technique for a modern, effortless application?
I start at the cupid’s bow, trace the natural lip shape, and enhance it where necessary. Then I lightly blend the color with my finger to avoid harsh lines. The goal is a look that appears completely natural—without visible contours or exaggerated definition.

Many people are unsure how to find the right shade—what’s your advice?
Choose a shade that matches your natural lip color. This will give you a soft yet effective definition. There’s no right or wrong here—the possible combinations are very personal.

Are there any unexpected ways you use lip liner, or places you apply it?
Actually, yes! I use the shade “Mink” to contour my nose—or even to draw on little freckles.

Which lip liner and lipstick duos from the collection are your personal favorites?

I have so many favorites! Right now, especially the following:

PictureBut of course, it depends on the person—skin undertone, desired look, occasion. I recently used “Coucou” and “Pinch” on Nicole Kidman for her Met Gala look—an absolute favorite!

Is there a common mistake people make with lip makeup—and how can you avoid it?
Many people reach for highly pigmented liners like red—personally, I find that those shades are hard to correct. My philosophy? It’s better to work with neutral tones. That way, you can define the lip shape much more precisely and naturally—and small mistakes are easier to fix.
