Winter Sun Safety

Why UV protection is a must in winter too

Winter Sun Safety

Many people still associate UV protection with summer, beach and lounging by the pool, and tend to neglect sun protection in winter. We explain why SPF is a must throughout the year (and especially in the winter). Your skin will thank you.

As a rule of thumb for sun protection in winter, anyone who spends more than 15 minutes a day outdoors should use a day cream with a sun protection filter. By the way: UV protection is also necessary in winter when the sky is overcast, because the radiation also finds its way through the clouds. What many people don't think about is that untanned winter complexions are much more sensitive to UV rays than tanned, melanin protected summer skin.

For daily UV protection we recommend:

The skis or snowboards are ready to go and you'll soon be hitting the slopes? Wonderful, but please pack reliable sun protection, preferably with SPF 50. UV exposure in the mountains is particularly intense because the layers of air at altitude are thinner and the rays are therefore filtered less strongly. Fun fact: for every 1000 metres of altitude, the UV intensity increases by about 10 to 15 percent. In addition, snow and ice reflect the UV rays, meaning their strength can increase by up to 90 percent. Another reason to always have sunscreen (and also lip protection!) with you.

Particularly high UV protection for sunny winter days on the slopes:
