Azelaic acid is a little-known (yet well-researched) weapon in the fight against blemishes, discoloration and scars. The active ingredient has the same effect as a gentle leave-on peeling - it opens and refines the pores. As a strong antioxidant, it also makes the skin less sensitive and clearer in the long run. Products with a concentration of 15 to 20 percent are ideal, but even lower doses can make an enormous difference in the complexion. Important: for doses higher than 15 percent azelaic acid requires a prescription - it is hence advisable to consult with a dermatologist before use; the same rule applies for everyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. While people with impure and uneven skin are those who will benefit the most from azelaic acid, it is also used to calm sensitivities and reduce redness.
