More than just sun protection: SPF as an essential part of skincare.

Why is sun protection important not just in summer, but all year round?

UV radiation is present all year round - even on gray winter days. UVA rays penetrate clouds and glass and are the main cause of skin ageing, pigmentation spots and the breakdown of collagen. Daily sun protection is therefore far more than just a beauty routine - it is an act of self-care. At Sun Matters, we always say that our big vision is to integrate sun protection into everyday life as naturally as brushing your teeth.

What are the differences in skin exposure in summer vs. winter?

In summer, the intensity of UVB rays is particularly high - they give you a tan, but also cause sunburn. In winter, on the other hand, long-wave UVA rays dominate, penetrating deep into the skin and causing silent damage.

How can SPF be easily integrated into everyday life, even in the city?

Quite simply: with textures that are suitable for everyday use and that you enjoy using. Our SPF 50 Light Serum feels like light care - no stickiness, no whitening, no shine. It replaces your day cream, works under make-up and automatically becomes part of your daily routine.

What are the pros and cons of chemical vs. mineral filters?

Mineral filters reflect UV rays, while chemical filters absorb them. Both variants provide reliable protection - the decisive factor is not either/or, but what feels right and comfortable for your own skin. Our formulations are based on state-of-the-art, photostable chemical filters that offer a high level of protection without weighing down the skin or affecting the microbiome. This makes us the first sunscreen in the world to be officially certified as microbiome-friendly - a real milestone for sensitive and demanding skin.

How does this microbiome-friendly formulation differ from classic sun creams?

Our products are certified microbiome-friendly, which means they preserve the skin's natural flora and support a healthy skin barrier. While conventional sun creams often disrupt this balance and thus promote irritation or blemishes, Sun Matters provides highly effective protection without compromising the skin's balance.

What should you look for in an SPF INCI list?

Transparency and balance are crucial: no irritating fragrances or unnecessary additives - instead, high-quality UV filters and skin-strengthening active ingredients such as antioxidants, ectoine and hyaluronic acid, which additionally nourish and protect the skin.

What should people with sensitive skin look out for?

Microbiome-friendly, dermatologically tested and fragrance-free formulations are the best choice for sensitive skin. Our serum and stick are extremely well tolerated - even by sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Which SPF products do you use every day and how do you combine them with make-up?

I only use our SPF 50 Light Serum in the morning. I have rather dry skin, but the Light Serum is completely sufficient for me as day care. The serum combines perfectly with my make-up - without any shine or pilling. I always have our SPF 50 Serum Stick with me during the day so that I can easily top up my sun protection if necessary. The stick is super practical and also works over make-up.

Do you have a favorite routine for skin protection in winter?

Especially in fall and winter, I combine our SPF Light Serum with the Barrier Boost Supplement - it provides the skin with nourishing vitamins, antioxidants and valuable fatty acids such as vitamin D, biotin, omega fatty acids, lycopene, selenium and vitamin E from the inside. This keeps my skin healthy, balanced and radiant even when the heating air is dry.

What common mistakes do you see when using sun protection?

Many people forget to reapply their sunscreen throughout the day, apply too little or only see it as summer care. However, UV radiation is omnipresent and SPF should be a natural part of any skincare routine all year round. We always say you should try to reapply every 2 hours. That's exactly why we brought out the stick, so there are no more excuses.

What do you think about "SPF prevents vitamin D production"?

Even with regular use, sun care does not completely block UV radiation. Some of the light always reaches the skin. In order to optimally support the vitamin D balance, a conscious diet or supplementation with products such as Barrier Boost can be useful. Most dermatologists therefore also recommend vitamin D supplementation.

What role does sun protection play in anti-ageing and skin health?
SPF is the most effective anti-ageing measure of all. Around 80% of visible skin ageing is caused by UV radiation - not by genes or time. If you wear sunscreen every day, you are not only protecting your skin, but also investing in its future - for an even, healthy and radiant complexion.

What myths about sun protection would you like to dispel?

Some myths persist:

"Sunscreen is heavy and uncomfortable" used to be true. Today, modern, light textures make SPF the most pleasant and most important step in any skincare routine.

Or "Dark skin doesn't need sun protection." This is not true, as darker skin types are also affected by UV-induced damage.

How has your awareness of sun protection changed?

I used to associate sun protection mainly with summer and sun on the beach. It wasn't until I started working in a dermatology start-up that I realized how much daily UV radiation damages our skin. Skin damage happens unnoticed and gradually. This understanding fundamentally changed my awareness of skin care and gave me the impetus to found Sun Matters. This understanding fundamentally changed my awareness of skin care and ultimately gave me the impetus to found Sun Matters. My colleagues always have to laugh because I never leave the house without Sun Matters, even on my way to the gym in the morning.

Was there a moment that was particularly formative?
Yes, that was during my time in Brazil. There, I saw that many people went without sun protection - for fear of skin blemishes or irritation. At the same time, the sun was omnipresent and the skin was under a lot of strain. I realized that there was a need for products that offered reliable protection and at the same time cared for the skin without stressing it.

If you could only give one tip for daily sun protection - what would it be?
Wear sun protection. Every day. Regardless of the season or the weather and choose a product that feels good for you and that you love. Because only what you enjoy becomes routine - and therefore the most effective protection for healthy, radiant skin.

Because the sun matters - and so does your skin.
