Ingredient Glossary

We are the first to admit that the amount of skincare ingredients can sometimes be confusing and hard to grasp. Skincare came a long way since the 90’s when the innovation was largely directed towards intense moisturizing and anti-wrinkle products. These days there’s a solution to every problem under the sun: redness, hyperpigmentation, loss of elasticity, breakouts, inflammation, sun damage as well as every other condition you can think of. To help you navigate the modern skincare landscape, we made a glossary with an overview of the ingredients and their effects. Your skin will thank you!

Bakuchiol

Studies show that bakuchiol’s anti-aging properties are very much comparable to those of retinol, minus the side effects that can sometimes occur with the use of vitamin A. While bakuchiol can help prevent signs of premature aging thanks to its antioxidant, collagen-stimulating and moisturizing properties, it is also great for cleansing, as its anti-inflammatory powers minimize blemish build-up and soothe the skin. Finally, it can help reduce melanin synthesis, thus helping to lighten skin tone. Good to know: bakuchiol is also safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding (unlike vitamin A).

Vitamin C

Whether in a serum, mask or cream, no other active ingredient will conjure a more beautiful glow than vitamin C. The ultra-strong antioxidant that keeps free radicals at bay helps with numerous skin problems, such as hyperpigmentation and bumps, but it also boosts collagen synthesis and protects the skin from irritation, inflammation and environmental pollution. Of all forms of vitamin C, L-ascorbic acid is the best-researched and most effective for the skin. Start at a concentration of 5-10 percent and gradually increase up to 20 percent. The active ingredient that will benefit truly every skin type is particularly sensitive to light and heat - store it in a dark and cool place!

Ceramides

Classics among skincare ingredients, ceramides are naturally-occurring lipids that make up for about 50 percent of the skin’s composition. Young skin produces plenty of ceramides, but with age (and external influences such as UV radiation) the body’s own production readily decreases. However, ceramide-based skincare not only helps with filling the moisture depots and strengthening the skin’s protective layer, it also provides anti-aging benefits by stimulating natural regeneration processes, leaving the skin looking healthy and radiant. Bonus: ceramides are skin-identical ingredients and are therefore particularly well tolerated by all skin types.

Retinol

Retinol is one of the most researched anti-aging ingredients. As a form of vitamin A, it supports skin regeneration and acts as an energy booster for the fibroblasts, cells that are essential to the formation of connective tissue. Fibroblasts stimulate collagen and elastin production, which makes the skin not only look more even, but also younger and more radiant. Retinol is a game-changer for mature skin, but it also visibly benefits younger skin in which it helps prevent impurities, scars and sun damage. It is important to note that retinol should be applied at night because the active ingredient makes skin sensitive to light, meaning that it is essential to protect it with a high SPF during the day. If you are new to retinol, start with a low dosage of 0,1 or 0,3 percent and gradually increase as your skin adjusts to the effects. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please speak to your doctor or dermatologist before using.

Hyaluronic Acid

The secret to plump, baby-soft skin? Your natural hyaluronic acid content! Sadly, it decreases by about 1 percent annually from the age of approximately 25. Hyaluronic acid is able to improve skin’s elasticity by supporting epidermal cells - its ability to hold up to 1000-times its own weight in water increases the skin’s moisture levels and keeps it looking fresh with improved elasticity and diminished fine lines. Thanks to the padding effect it gives to the skin, it is a perfect base for makeup and other skincare products. And the best? It is suitable for all skin types and all seasons!

Probiotics

Probiotics are live microorganisms with numerous health benefits when consumed or applied to the body. They play a crucial role in keeping the microbiome in balance. Probiotic skincare has a number of beneficial properties for the skin, such as maintaining a healthy pH value, strengthening the skin's protective barrier, retaining moisture and reducing redness. However, it is important to know that probiotics in skincare alone are not a one-strike solution as they work best when combined with prebiotics. Prebiotics naturally encourage probiotics to grow and help them thrive so they can do their job effectively.

CBD

Not to worry - CBD won’t make you high, but it most certainly will make you look nice. CBD is a short term for cannabidiol and its main benefits are its calming properties. It regulates and soothes the skin, helping to reduce problems such as redness and irritation. Due to its anti-inflammatory and sebum-reducing effect, CBD is perfect for soothing impure and acne-prone skin. Being of plant origin, CBD also has antioxidant properties that protect the complexion from environmental free radicals, helping to reduce the signs of aging.
