François Nars was born with a passion for beauty and style in the south of France, as his mother was a fashion lover and his grandmother a makeup addict. After being trained as a makeup artist at Carita in Paris, he moved to New York in 1984. His looks were unusual, daring and against the mainstream and much appreciated by photographers such as Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. He created iconic looks with Kate Moss, Madonna or Linda Evangelista. In 1994 he launched his beauty line of 12 lipsticks - with sophistication and minimalist packaging. He first photographed the advertising campaign himself - the start of his second career as a photographer. He became a legendary rule-breaker through his bestseller products such as 'Orgasm' or 'Deep Throat'. Iconic. Individual. Unexpected.
