Lipstick: The make-up classic for every occasion
For thousands of years, coloured lips have been considered an ideal of beauty in a wide variety of cultures. And not without reason: whether for a glam look or for no-make-up make-up, lipstick instantly gives you a fresh appearance. With a range of finishes, from matte to glossy, and countless shades, not to mention ultra-nourishing formulas, there is a suitable product for every lipstick fan.
The lipstick story: The history of lipstick
There is evidence that lip colour was used in the ancient past. For example, Sumerian women used powdered gemstones, while Cleopatra is said to have made her lipstick from ground insects. The first commercial lipstick was sold by Guerlain in the late 19th century. But lipstick only really took off with the advent of Hollywood and film stars, who made red lips a symbol of luxury and glamour. Incidentally, the standard twist-up lipstick we use today has only been around since the 1920s.
The variety of lipsticks, from matte and long-lasting to glossy and sheer
In addition to the evergreen reds and nudes, there are ideal lipstick shades for every type, from coral to pink to dark berry tones. But it’s not just the colour that’s important when choosing a lipstick; the finish and formulation are also crucial, as they determine aspects such as durability and nourishment:
- Matte lipsticks: It is particularly worthwhile reaching for a matte lipstick if you want to go for an intense shade, as these are extra long-lasting and ensure a rich colour. The must-have among matte lipsticks is, of course, a matte red shade – it instantly enhances even the simplest outfit.
- Long-lasting lipsticks: If you want your lipstick to withstand eating and drinking and to look like it was freshly applied for a long time, it’s best to go for matte finishes. They contain fewer oils, which can cause the lipstick to smudge. Liquid lipsticks, which are applied like a lip gloss but dry to a matte finish, are also particularly transfer-proof.
- Glossy lipstick: A glossy lipstick makes the lips look bigger and can also smooth out small lip wrinkles. It often contains nourishing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or shea butter, which moisturise the lips when worn. The colour intensity is medium to sheer, which is why this lipstick is ideal for everyday wear or for work.
