Mascara – a must-have for stunning lashes
Mascara is one of the most-used make-up products, and not without reason. It makes everyone look instantly more alert and gives the eyes a seductive look. Depending on the result you want, there are countless variations to choose from with different formulations, brushes and colours. So you can be sure that there is the perfect mascara for every taste.
The history of mascara
Mascara is not only one of the most popular make-up products, but also one of the oldest. It was even used in ancient Egypt, where it was mixed as a black paste and applied to the eyelashes to protect against evil spirits. The first solid mascara in a pan, which had to be applied with a damp brush, was invented in the 19th century. However, the mascara in a bottle, as we know it today, was not developed until 1957. Since then, it has become an essential in every make-up bag, and waterproof formulations, colourful variants and tubing mascaras have all made their way onto the shelves.
Volume, length, separation: the diverse world of mascaras
The many different types of mascara give you lots to choose from, but they can also make it more difficult to find the right one. That’s why we’re giving you a brief overview of the diverse world of mascaras:
- Volume mascara: A volume mascara usually ´comes with a dense nylon brush that applies a lot of product to the lashes. This creates the appearance of fuller lashes, but does not separate the lashes as well as other mascaras.
- Lengthening mascara: In contrast to the volume variant, this mascara brush is usually made of plastic. This way, the “little hairs” on the brush can grasp each individual lash, separating and lengthening them. Some mascaras also contain small fibres in their formulations that lie on the lash hairs, giving them the appearance of additional length.
- Waterproof mascara: Whether you’re doing sports or spending time in the summer sun, waterproof mascara ensures that your mascara never smears. At the same time, it holds the curl particularly well, even if you have rather heavy and unruly lashes. This is due to the particularly wax-based formulation. Because of its durability, waterproof mascara should be removed at the end of the day with an oil-based make-up remover.
- Tubing mascara: Instead of waxes, tubing mascara uses polymers that wrap around your lashes like tiny tubes. They last particularly long, but can also be easily removed with water.
- Colourful mascara: It provides a change from the usual black or brown colour options. A subtle burgundy, dark blue or khaki can accentuate your own eye colour, while bright yellow, purple or pink can make the lower lashes in particular stand out.
