Do you personally distinguish between “good” and “bad” stress?
Absolutely, and biology does as well. Acute stress can temporarily enhance alertness, the fight-or-flight response, and even certain immune responses. Throughout our evolution, cortisol has been crucial to human survival. Cortisol levels rise early in the morning to wake us up and prepare us for what lies ahead. Chronic stress, on the other hand, has been shown to increase cortisol levels, which directly impairs the barrier function of the epidermis, slows wound healing, and increases transepidermal water loss (TEWL). From the skin’s perspective, duration is far more important than intensity. Skin cells respond to persistently elevated cortisol levels by reducing lipid synthesis and increasing inflammation, causing damage to accumulate.
Are there hidden stress factors for the skin?
The most underestimated stressors are the minor, everyday ones. Clinical studies show that long-term exposure to dry indoor air, especially when humidity is below 40%, significantly increases TEWL levels. Exposure to blue light has been shown to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which accelerate oxidative stress and pigment irregularities, particularly in medium to darker skin tones. Frequent air travel combines dehydration, low cabin humidity, changes in pressure, and circadian disruptions—a perfect combination for damaging the skin barrier. None of these factors has a dramatic effect on its own, but biologically speaking, the skin experiences them as chronic stress.
If stress triggers premature aging, would a stress-free life be the ideal anti-aging strategy?
Theoretically, yes—but in reality, skin aging is less about eliminating stress and more about improving cell regeneration. It has also been proven that people who live longer have been exposed to less stress throughout their lives (supplemented, of course, by a healthy diet). Cortisol is produced in the adrenal glands, located directly above the kidneys, and is distributed to all organs (yes, the skin is your largest organ), and we can detect cortisol in skin cells. Once there, cortisol acts as a protective barrier without which skin cells cannot function properly. Cortisol should follow a healthy rhythm (rising early in the morning and decreasing at night so that melatonin can take effect and help you prepare for the nightly repair cycle), but if cortisol levels in the skin remain high, the circadian rhythm of cell regeneration is disrupted, ultimately negatively affecting the skin barrier.
Research shows that skin with a strong barrier and efficient antioxidant systems can recover more quickly from stress-related damage.
My personal approach focuses on improving the skin’s resilience by supporting barrier repair, calming inflammatory signals, and promoting controlled cell renewal by regulating the overproduction of cortisol in the skin.
