Never Without SPF

The Golden Rules

1. Timing is everything

If UV protection is only applied in the sun, up to 50 percent of the amount applied to the skin can evaporate before it has a chance to bond with the skin and therefore becomes less effective. Sunscreen should always be applied to cool, clean, dry skin in the shade (ideally indoors) 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun. It goes without saying that you should spend midday in the shade anyway, right?

2. The factor question

The experts agree: if you spend a long time at the beach or pool, i.e. if light-reflecting water is also involved, you should pay attention to these three indications on the label: Broad spectrum, waterproof and SPF30 or higher. Interestingly, SPF50 offers only slightly better protection from UV rays than SPF30, as it filters out 98 percent of UV rays, while SPF30 blocks 96.7 percent.

3. T for texture

The choice of texture should depend on how your skin feels - if you have sensitive and dry skin, you should use a moisturizing, creamy sunscreen; if you have an oily or combination skin type that is also sensitive, you should opt for an SPF that is either gel-based or has the formulation of a light lotion.

4. The quantity makes the difference

The motto here is more is more, but a good rule of thumb is two finger lengths - that's the amount you need for your face, ears and neck. Are you wearing a bikini? The recommended amount for the body is about a good shot glass full. Good to know: If you want to use a sunscreen spray on site, dermatologists recommend applying a base layer of SPF lotion first so that sunburn doesn't stand a chance.

5. Don't forget!

The most commonly forgotten areas are the ears, the back of the neck and the hairline, but they need just as much protection as the rest of our exposed skin. A hat, cap or scarf is of course a must, your scalp will thank you for it. And it never hurts to add a little style to your beach look, does it?

6. Let's cool down

After sunbathing is before sunbathing. In other words: Moisturizing your skin after a long day at the pool is a non-negotioable. Drum roll for: Aloe vera - because of its anti-inflammatory and soothing effect. Moisture-binding substances such as glycerine and antioxidants such as vitamin C plump up stressed summer skin on top.
